Why this blog?

I love travelling and writing so would like to share my journeys with whoever may be interested. You may enjoy sitting in comfort with a cuppa reading about other people wading through a bog or bickering about the best way to get from A to B. Or, like me, you may be an inveterate traveller temporarily forced to remain sedentary and dreaming of your next adventure. Whatever your reason for visiting this site, I hope that I can entertain you and perhaps inform you about destinations and ways to get there.

I have always had a passion for travel. Years ago, I used to think nothing of jumping on a plane for a quick fix of a European city or Mediterranean beach. However, in recent years, ever increasing concern about climate change and over-tourism has led me to seek more sustainable sources of adventure.  I try to avoid flying if there is a viable alternative and limit air travel to an occasional and irksome necessity.

The best part of travelling is meeting other people, both locals and fellow travellers. Using public transport and seeking information by talking to people rather than looking everything up on the internet is a great way to connect so we use it rather than hiring a car at our destination. Our favourite means of transport are our trusty bicycles and our own two feet so many of our journeys are cycle tours or hikes.  We try to stay at small, family-owned accommodation (which is just as well as luxury hotels would be well beyond our budget). Sustainable, slow travel can be reasonably priced, rewarding and does not have to be too arduous. My husband and travelling companion, Nye, and I both prefer a few creature comforts in our active old age.  You certainly don’t need to be young or super-fit to travel under your own steam. I hope you enjoy these travel diaries and that they may even inspire you to make your own slow-paced adventures.
